Safe Paddling: Essential Kayaking Gear and Risk Prevention

Essential Gear

Life Jacket: Must be worn at all times during the trip. Choose a high-buoyancy model designed specifically for paddling to ensure freedom of movement.

Spray Skirt (for closed cockpits): Prevents spray or rain from entering the boat, avoiding capsizing caused by water accumulation inside the cockpit.

Bulkheads or Foam Blocks: Placed in the front and rear compartments of the boat to maintain buoyancy and facilitate rescue even if the boat capsizes and takes on water.

Bail-out tools: A hand pump or sponge to remove water that enters the cockpit.

Environmental Assessment

Check the weather conditions in the water area before setting out to avoid strong winds, thunderstorms, or dense fog. Be aware of tidal or current changes and plan a turnaround point. Paddle with a partner whenever possible and stay within sight of each other.

Basic Self-Rescue

If you capsize, stay calm first. Grab the hull or paddle and use the buoyancy of your life jacket to stay afloat. For sit-on-top kayaks, practice the “wet escape” technique: push off from the cockpit opening with both hands and slide your body out of the kayak.

By understanding basic safety risks and carrying compliant equipment, you can enjoy kayaking while ensuring your safety in nature.
